FAA sets tighter maintenance limits for 1,163 Airbus helicopters

The rule takes effect July 21 and covers 1,163 Airbus helicopters, including AS350B2 and EC130T2 models. Operators have 30 days to update maintenance instructions for the tighter limits.

Airbus helicopter operators in the United States have a new maintenance clock to watch. In a June 16 federal rule, the Federal Aviation Administration adopted a directive for Airbus Helicopters models AS350B2, AS350B3, EC130B4 and EC130T2, and the rule takes effect July 21, 2026.

The FAA says the updated airworthiness limits are needed to guard against failures in critical parts and primary structural components, the kind of problem that can lead to loss of control.

The manual becomes the rulebook

The agency requires operators to revise the airworthiness limitations section of the existing maintenance manual or instructions for continued airworthiness, along with the approved maintenance or inspection program where that applies. Operators have 30 days after the effective date to make the change.

The FAA says that is a shorter timetable than the European rule it relied on, which gave operators 12 months to revise their approved program. The basic job is the same: fold the new limits into the documents that guide ongoing maintenance and inspections.
