India seeks $230 million to keep howitzers running

The Pentagon notice covers sustainment for M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, not new guns. It includes spares, depot work, training and technical support.

In a federal notice published by the Defense Department, the Government of India is seeking long-term sustainment support for M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The package is valued at $230 million and lists major defense equipment at $0, which means the request is focused on keeping the systems in service rather than adding new hardware.

Effective date: June 12, 2026

The notice says the support would include ancillary items, spare parts, repair and return, training, technical assistance, a field service representative, depot capability and other logistics and program support. BAE Systems, based in Cumbria, UK, is named as the principal contractor.

What the package would cover

For a general audience, sustainment is the work that keeps military equipment operating after it has been delivered. That can include maintenance help, parts, training and the deeper repair work done at depots.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency says India would use its national funds for the package. The notice also says there are no known offset agreements at this point, and that the sale would not require additional U.S. government or contractor representatives in India.

What officials say it would do

The policy justification says the package would support the U.S.-Indian strategic relationship and help strengthen India as a defense partner in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions. It also says the support would improve India’s ability to meet current and future threats, strengthen homeland defense and deter regional threats.

The notice says the proposed sale would not change the basic military balance in the region and would not affect U.S. defense readiness.
